Our Story

Open Pollinated Productions LLC was founded in 2013 to create films that spark dialogue, deepen awareness, and illuminate the forces shaping our world. The company produces character-driven documentaries and original media projects that explore environmental, cultural, and social themes with depth, nuance, and emotional resonance.

Founded by award-winning filmmaker M. Sean Kaminsky, Open Pollinated Productions builds on more than two decades of experience producing and directing documentary programming for networks including HBO, PBS, and Sundance Channel. Sean’s work spans broadcast, theatrical, and independent platforms, with projects that examine environmental sustainability, civil rights, sexuality, spirituality, and the human search for meaning.

The company’s first feature documentary, Open Sesame: The Story of Seeds, received a limited theatrical release and national broadcast on PBS. The film investigates the fragile future of the world’s seed supply and the growing tension between biodiversity and corporate consolidation. Through farmers, activists, and seed keepers, it reveals what is at stake in the fight to preserve the genetic foundation of our food system.

Prior to founding Open Pollinated Productions LLC (formerly Organik Media, Inc), Sean directed and produced a wide range of acclaimed projects for HBO, Sundance Channel, ThinkFilm, PBS, and others. His work is known for generating empathy for its subjects while engaging audiences in meaningful, often challenging conversations.

In addition to filmmaking, Sean is the author of Naked Lens: Video Blogging & Video Journaling to Reclaim the YOU in YouTube, a book encouraging creators to reclaim authentic self-expression in the digital age, and Shoot 3D Like a Pro, a hands-on guide to mastering emerging visual technologies.

Beyond nonfiction, he has written seven fantasy and science fiction novels, including a work that earned the 2021 New York Author Project Award in the YA Fiction category. Across genres, his storytelling explores identity, power, transformation, and the unseen forces shaping human experience.

Sean holds a Master of Arts in Media & Communications from the European Graduate School and a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Television from the University of British Columbia.

Open Pollinated Productions continues to develop documentary films, podcasts, and media projects that challenge assumptions, foster connection, and invite audiences to look more closely at the systems shaping our shared future.
